Plot
House Atreides is ordered to take over stewardship of Arrakis, the only source of the spice the empire runs on, knowing the order is a trap. The transfer goes badly and Paul and his mother Jessica end up in the deep desert with the Fremen. The film covers the first half of Herbert's novel and stops there.

The first adaptation to treat the book's politics as the story rather than as background. Deliberate, heavy and largely humourless, which suits it. Ending mid-narrative was a real gamble and the second part justified it.
