Plot
Twelve craft arrive at sites around the world and do nothing. Linguist Louise Banks is brought in to work out whether communication is possible at all, while twelve governments run twelve separate translations and begin to disagree. The language turns out to change how she experiences time.

Science fiction where the problem is grammar rather than weaponry, and it is far more tense for it. Adams carries almost the whole film. The reveal reframes the opening scene rather than negating it, which is the hard version of that trick.
