Plot
Batman, Lieutenant Gordon and district attorney Harvey Dent have organised crime in Gotham on the back foot. The Joker offers the mob a way out and then turns the city into a series of forced choices, each designed to prove that its institutions and its protector will break under pressure. Dent is the one who breaks.

A crime film in a superhero costume, closer to Heat than to its own genre. Ledger's Joker is the reason it is remembered, but Aaron Eckhart's Dent is what gives the plot its shape. The IMAX photography still looks better than most of what followed it.
